Super App & Digital Wallet Development

Chat, pay and shop in one app. We build super apps, wallets and mini-app platforms in Ethiopia, as the team behind Meda.

Ethiopia Super App and Wallet Development, From the Makers of Meda

360Ground builds super apps and digital wallets for Ethiopian banks, wallet operators, telecoms and enterprises. We created Meda, our in-house super app that combines secure chat, mobile banking, in-chat payments and a mini-app marketplace on iOS, Android and web. Meda grew to 200,000+ users, over 80% of them using it daily, on an MTProto v2 and Scala/Akka backend built for 50M+ messages per second, and became known as Ethiopia’s WeChat. We also built the Ethiopian Securities Exchange’s regulated crowd-investment platform and Dashen Bank’s Amole POS ecosystem. We deliver the apps, wallet backend, KYC, mini-app SDKs and admin dashboards for banks and licensed issuers.

What is a super app, and what are examples in Ethiopia?

A super app is one mobile app that combines many services, usually messaging, payments and a marketplace of partner mini-apps, so users do not need a separate app for each task. In Ethiopia, telecoms and banks now offer super apps. Meda, the super app 360Ground built in-house, combined chat, mobile banking, in-chat payments and dozens of mini-apps, including taxis, shopping and government services, for more than 200,000 users.
A digital wallet holds electronic money linked to the user’s phone number. Users add money at an agent, from a bank account or by transfer, then pay merchants, bills and other people from the app, and cash out at agents or banks. Behind the app, a ledger records every balance movement, while limits, KYC and fraud checks run on each transaction. We build the wallet app, ledger, agent tools and back office for the bank or licensed issuer.
It depends on scope. A wallet with registration, transfers, bill payments and an admin portal is a much smaller first release than a full super app with messaging, mini-apps and partner SDKs. We recommend launching a focused core, proving adoption, then adding services and mini-apps in phases. Integration with your core banking system, payment rails and ID verification often sets the pace, so we confirm a dated plan after a short architecture workshop.
Issuing electronic money is regulated by the National Bank of Ethiopia under the National Payment System Proclamation No. 718/2011, as amended by Proclamation No. 1282/2023. A wallet must be offered by a bank or a licensed payment instrument issuer, and agents must follow NBE agent rules. 360Ground is the technology provider: we build wallets for banks and licensed issuers and design in the KYC, limits, reporting and data-protection controls their licence requires.
A mobile banking app serves your existing customers’ accounts: balances, transfers, bill payments and cards. A super app aims for daily use by adding messaging, commerce and partner mini-apps, and can reach people who are not yet customers. Many banks start with a strong mobile banking app and add wallet and mini-app features later. We build both, so we can recommend the path that fits your strategy, budget and licence.
Yes, and for some businesses it is the faster route. A mini-app inside an existing super app such as telebirr reaches its users without a separate download, but you work within that platform’s rules, design and payment flow, and you share the customer relationship. Your own super app or wallet takes longer but gives you the brand, data and roadmap. We build mini-apps for existing platforms as well as full super apps.
