What does SaaS stand for, and when is it the right model?

SaaS stands for software as a service: one application, hosted in the cloud, that many customers use through a browser or app and pay for by subscription. It fits when many organisations need the same core workflow, when you want recurring revenue rather than one-off sales, and when updates can be released centrally. 360Ground builds on this shared-platform model: Ethiopia’s National SMS Gateway, built for MInT, is used by more than 300 government agencies without dedicated infrastructure of their own.
Build custom software when one organisation needs a system shaped around its own processes, data and integrations. Build SaaS when you plan to sell or share the same product with many customers, who configure it rather than change the code. Many products sit in between: the National Business Portal we built for MInT runs one core engine with city-specific front ends for Addis Ababa, Adama, Dire Dawa and Bahir Dar. We help you choose the model during scoping, before any code is written.
It depends on scope, not on the label MVP. The fastest route is to launch one core workflow for one type of customer, with sign-up, simple plans and an admin dashboard, then add features once real users are paying. Integrations with banks, payment gateways or government systems add the most time. After scoping, 360Ground gives you a written feature list, a milestone-based delivery timeline and a cost estimate, so you can plan your runway with confidence.
Cost is driven by four things: the number of features in the first release, the tenancy model, the integrations needed (payments, SMS, ERP or government systems) and where the platform is hosted. Budget also for what comes after launch: hosting, monitoring, support and continued feature delivery. An Addis Ababa team that builds, hosts and supports the product keeps these costs in one contract. We give a scoped estimate after a planning session on your MVP.
Each customer’s data is kept separate by design. Depending on risk and budget, we give each tenant its own database, its own schema, or tag every record with a tenant ID enforced at the data layer. On top of that come role-based permissions, encryption, audit logs and tested backups. We apply controls used on the government platforms we have built, such as role-based access and audit logging on the National Business Portal, and design for Ethiopia’s Personal Data Protection Proclamation No. 1321/2024.
Yes. We build subscription management that prices plans in birr and handles trials, upgrades, renewals, failed payments and automatic invoices. Payments are collected through the licensed banks or payment gateways you contract with, which we connect through their APIs; 360Ground does not hold subscriber funds. If you also sell outside Ethiopia, plans can carry other currencies. We plan for Ministry of Revenue e-invoicing requirements from the start, so subscription invoices stay compliant as you grow.
