History

1960: Statistics became a regular government activity following the Addis Ababa conference of African Statisticians from UNECA member countries. 1963: Established as the Central Statistical Office under the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Tourism. 1972: Reorganized under Proclamation 303/1972, becoming part of the Planning Commission. 1989: Renamed to Central Statistical Agency (CSA), reporting directly to the Council of Ministers. 2001: Transferred to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development. 2021: Rebranded as the Ethiopian Statistical Service to reflect its expanded role and responsibilities.
