The Ministry of Health of Ethiopia was established in 1948 to oversee public health administration. In 1995, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute (EPHI) was created through the merger of the former National Research Institute of Health, the Ethiopian Nutrition Institute, and the Department of Traditional Medicine of the Ministry of Health. This merger was formalized by the Council of Ministers Regulation No. 4/1996, recognizing EPHI as an autonomous public authority with its own legal personality.
