Awash International Bank was established on November 10, 1994, by 486 founding shareholders with a paid-up capital of 24.2 million birr. The bank commenced operations on February 13, 1995. It is named after the Awash River, symbolizing the bank’s role in nurturing and supporting Ethiopia’s economic growth. Since its inception, the bank has experienced significant growth, expanding its services and increasing its capital and assets. In 2014, Awash Bank partnered with Misys FusionBanking Essence to enhance its technological capabilities and support its expansion efforts. As of June 2020, the bank had over 700 branches across Ethiopia and a paid-up capital of 5.87 billion birr.
