Alzheimer’s Disease Diagnosis System (Addis Ababa University College of Health Science)

Our task was to design, develop, and launch a multi-platform application of Alzheimer’s Disease diagnosis system. The primary focus of the web based mobile application is on the interactive tools of Alzheimer’s Disease Pocket card app that consists the design & development of cognitive assessment tools-patient [Clock Drawing Test (CDT), General  Practitioner Assessment of Cognition (GPCOG), Memory Impairment Screen (MIS), Mini-COG TM Test and Saint Louis University Mental State Examination (SLUM)]; cognitive assessment tools-informant [8-item interview to differentiate Aging and Dementia, GPCOG and Cognitive Decline Questionnaire in Elderly] and functional assessment tools [ Katz Basic Activities of Daily Living Scale, Geriatric Depression Scale: short form].

The developed mobile app for Alzheimer’s diagnosis is compatible with both iOS and Android devices. The mobile app is intended to serve Doctors at specialized hospitals at Addis Ababa Black Lion Hospital, Dila University Hospital, and Wolita University Hospital. The mobile & web application core modules & activities include 

  1. Patient data registration & management:
  2. Memory assessment tools for health professionals & caregivers to assess an individual’s memory and cognitive function 
  3. Symptom tracking: track and record patient symptoms, which can help identify patterns and track the progression of the disease.
  4. Educational resources: information & resources about Alzheimer’s disease
  5. Personalization: health professionals & caregivers can customize the app to their specific needs and preferences
  6. Works offline: the mobile app is designed to work offline and synchronize with the server whenever there is access to the internet 
  7. User registration & management: complete user administration and managment system. 
  8. Training: provided training 
  9. Support & Maintenance: provided support & maintenance after handover. 

The consultant demonstrated a strong understanding of the requirements & communicated & documented their ideas to the project team. The consultant was also able to effectively troubleshoot issues that arose during the development process and provided timely updates on the progress of the project.
